Rory McIlroy is back where it all unraveled. After finally completing his career Grand Slam, the Northern Irishman returns to Royal Portrush from July 17–20 for the 2025 Open Championship—and it’s personal.
This isn’t just another stop on the major circuit. It’s a chance for McIlroy to exorcise some serious demons and maybe, just maybe, hoist a second Claret Jug.
The Gauntlet of Royal Portrush
Royal Portrush isn’t here to make friends. This legendary links course in Northern Ireland is as beautiful as it is brutal. Expect tight fairways, gnarly rough, unpredictable coastal winds, and bunkers deep enough to hide your hopes and dreams.
If the name rings a bell, it’s because Portrush last hosted The Open in 2019. That year, Shane Lowry rode a wave of crowd support to a commanding win, while McIlroy famously stumbled with a first-round 79 and missed the cut. Yeah, that one still stings.
Who’s in the Hunt?
McIlroy won’t be alone in the spotlight. Xander Schauffele has been red-hot and could easily steal the show. Shane Lowry’s back and looking to protect his home turf. Then there’s Viktor Hovland and Matt Fitzpatrick—both crafty links players who know how to navigate the chaos.
This field is stacked, and no one’s handing Rory a redemption arc for free.
Portrush: A Stage for History
Royal Portrush first hosted The Open back in 1951. It’s steeped in tradition and national pride. For McIlroy, it’s more than just a home game—it’s a shot at rewriting the story that went sideways in 2019.
The parallels to legends like Max Faulkner (who won that 1951 Open) are hard to ignore. Rory’s journey, complete with heartbreak and hard-earned triumph, could find its perfect full-circle moment on this hallowed ground.
Odds & Ends: Who’s the Favorite?
McIlroy heads into Portrush as the betting favorite at +800, with Schauffele and Fitzpatrick close behind. Keep an eye on the par-5s—especially holes 6 and 9—for birdie opportunities. But don’t get too comfortable. The 16th, better known as “Calamity Corner,” has ruined many a good round and could be a turning point come Sunday.
